When I first moved to Arizona, I drove for doordash for a couple weeks -- for the sole purpose of discovering what the locals were regularly craving. This is how I found one of my favorite spots, where my boyfriend and ex-boyfriend ended up working, and I ironically ended up ordering only through doordash.
So when I moved back to my hometown and saw one of my dear friends hosting trivia, I thought it would be a great opportunity to get out and about town, have some fun and mingle with new people. I'm about 9 months into regular hosting, and 11 months into living back in my hometown.
With how often (and far) I've willingly moved in the last handful of years, I've found I waste less and less time before jumping right into appreciation and exploring a new space. Whether it be a neighborhood, city, or state, I am searching like a hipster tourist, for the unique and interesting things to do.
I prefer to avoid the internet when I explore. I went on one destination hike I'd seen on social media, and we couldn't even get to the top of the mountain-- there was a line of people waiting through the end of the trail, all waiting their turn for the prime instagram spot.
So, I leave all discovery up to my intuition, my soul guidance. There are days I get into my car without a destination in mind. I drive without the GPS and allow my instincts to turn where I would like to. Sometimes I follow the sun, and at night, I will follow the darkness-- where I'll see stars.
I've gotten lost this way, off roaded my benz on far too rocky, yet winding whimsical roads. I've met witches this way, in wine bars who simply looked at me and said: "you're ready." I've been offered a job at a crystal farm, found side-street homemade honey, and metal antique shops, all this way of mine.
And I like this way of mine, curving corners and taking U-turns, stopping in tracks after I too quickly passed a street that was begging me to go in that direction. I love curiosity, tugging on my sleeve to park and open the door to yet another new experience.
And it is nice to live my life this way.
